Meet the REAL Entrepreneurs featured in the book!

Discover the real-life people, founders, and businesses that inspired the pages of Small Biz for Kids!

  • The “main” characters of Small Biz for Kids are inspired by the author’s toddler, Leo, and his cousin/fellow toddler, Holden. In real life, they are as adorable and roar-some as their counterparts in the book.

  • Barbara Bunny is inspired by Barbara Saunders and her wedding calligraphy and stationery business, You’re Invited. She ran the practice from her home in Fayetteville, NC for many years. Barbara was Annie’s mom, and she passed away in 2003, when Annie was just 17. She has fond memories of her mother’s creativity and special touches on everything (and everyone she met!). Barbara is a bunny because she gave Annie “B” - her stuffed bunny, when she was born. It’s a gift she still treasures as an adult.

Enjoy a bit more of this special story in this short video featurette, “Meet the Characters: Barbara Bunny”.

  • Laura Pony is based on Laura Franceschi, owner of Laura’s Family Gluten-free baked goods. For many years from Colorado and then North Carolina, Laura sold her crowd-pleasing gluten-free treats that brought everyone together - especially among her 7 children and 13 grandchildren (some of whom eat gluten and some who can’t!)

Laura is also Annie’s mother-in-law and doting grandmother to Leo (the lion).

  • Katie Sheep is inspired by Katie Franceschi of Yarn Love. For nearly 20 years, Katie has led this hand-dyed artisan yarn company from her home while raising 4 children just outside Des Moines, Iowa. Learn more and enjoy her beautiful colorways at yarnloveyarn.com.

Katie also happens to be Annie’s sister-in-law.

  • The Fleishman Giraffes and their birds that go tweet are the Fleishman family that founded the specialty children’s department store, Tiny Town, in Fayetteville, NC in 1951. Husband-and-wife, Herbert and Marilyn Fleishman, are the giraffes - and their (now grown!) kids are the birds - Michael, Minda, and Marcie.

To learn more about Tiny Town and their special story, watch this short video featurette.

  • Maghon May Doodle is the one-and-only Maghon Taylor - founder of the confetti gift shop empire, All She Wrote Notes® and bestselling author of the Betty Confetti children’s book series. Her online business is run from her vibrant boutique shop in Gibsonville, NC.

Maghon is a dear friend of Annie’s.

  • Tim Gazelle takes inspiration from Timothy Barnes, co-founder of Gazelle - a business management software for piano technicians.

Tim is also a friend and branding client of Annie’s.

  • Kevin Beaver gets his name from Kevin Mangum, an established custom home builder. His company, Mangum Design Build, is based in the NC Triangle. Learn more at mangumdesignbuild.com.

Kevin is a dear friend and married to Annie’s best friend, Chrissy. And psstt… if you look closely, you can spot her initial and their baby Emma’s initial on Kevin Beaver’s blueprint.

  • Wendy Turtle gets her light from Wendy Gates Corbett, an inspiring belonging researcher, coach, and consultant based in Raleigh, NC. Learn more about her work at signature-presentations.com.

Wendy is also one of Annie’s branding clients (and dear friends!)

  • Faith Flippers is the alter ego of Faith Teasley, an accomplished branding, wedding, and coastal photographer based in Fayetteville, NC. Her fine art book, Saltwater: Coastal Carolina, captures the entire NC carolina coastline like it’s never been seen or celebrated before. Learn more at faithteasley.com and saltwatercollection.com.

Faith is a long-time brand photography partner of Annie, dear friend, and affectionately deemed her “life” photographer. Faith is also delighted to live her Lisa Frank dreams as a dolphin in Small Biz for Kids.

  • Hannah Banana is playfully inspired by Hannah Consky - founder of H&Arrow Fitness and the owner of Pure Barre Asheville.

She’s also Annie’s cousin, and her sweet son, Sol, makes a cameo in Small Biz for Kids. Did you spot him?

  • Cody Cat is based on Cody Hays, a non-profit marketing strategist and founder of Marketing Mission - a company that helps non-profits maximize their marketing!

Cody is a coaching client and friend of Annie’s. His character is designed to resemble his sweet kitty cat, Marigold.

  • Trish Tiger is inspired by Tricia Russo, founder of the Cyan Gray Foundation - an incredible non-profit that helps cancer survivors navigate infertility. She’s also an award-winning filmmaker who shares her own journey to having her son despite a cancer diagnosis in the film, Love Always, Mom.

Trish is a friend, client, and former coworker of Annie from her Walt Disney Studios days in California.

  • Sarah Saurus is the alter ego of Sarah Potts, founder of Joyfully Organized - a strategic team of virtual assistants based in Raleigh, NC - serving clients nationwide.

She’s Annie’s virtual assistant, branding client, and super-awesome dino-loving friend!

  • Well, you guessed it! Annie Panda is based on Annie Franceschi (the author and illustrator, and the founder of the brand strategy company, Greatest Story Creative®). Annie’s work as a branding strategist and graphic designer is on display in the pages of Small Biz for Kids.

And if you look closely, you’ll also find her earlier in the book in a special family portait with her husband and son (aka Leo Lion!)

Meet the AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR
